Best Indie Adventure Games of 2008

You know what website is cool? Indie Games. Why is it cool? Because, well, it features a ton of indie games made by indie developers from all around the world. Not only does Indie Games take a look at all the adventure games that are being developed, they also look at first person shooters, platformers, RPGs and any other game genres you can think about.

In one of their more recent articles, Indie Games put together a list of the top 20 freeware adventure games. 20 games! That’s a lot of indie games to play in one year! All free!

My goodness.

Here’s the list:

  • Dirty Split
  • Life of D. Duck II
  • The Vacuum
  • Fedora Spade Episode 4: The Last Job
  • Yume Nikki
  • Quest for Glory II: Trial by Fire
  • Broken Sword 2.5: The Return of the Templars
  • Gun Mute
  • NES Quest
  • Nanobots
  • Sydney Treads the Catwalk
  • Ben Jordan Case 7: The Cardinal Sins
  • Limey Lizard: Waste Wizard
  • Beauties and Beasts
  • Chatroom
  • Questionaut
  • Everybody Dies
  • DayMare Town 2
  • Pragaras
  • The Maze of Madness

Now, if this list sounds awesome to you, why don’t you go on over to this article and see what each and every game is about. Indie Games is so awesome, they’ve done a one page write up of every game you see here.

Who said that the adventure genre is dying?

A new Deck13 game - Haunted

According to this post over at GameBoomers, Deck13 Interactive is working on a new advednture game called Haunted. Deck13 has been known for their fine work in several adventure games, including Ankh and Jack Keane. Seeing as those two games were pretty dang funny, we can hope we’ll see something similar in Haunted, even though the name of the game might suggest otherwise.

Here’s what the game is about:

Following the traces of her long-lost and probably dead sister, Mary encounters the obscure Professor Lindsey Ashford and her axe-wielding henchman Ethan. And when Mary finds out that she suddenly can see and talk to ghosts, she embarks upon a wild quest that ends with the revelation of a terrible secret of her own past - which could even lead to the destruction of the spirit world and the cosmic balance overall.

What starts out as a search for Mary’s supposedly dead sister ends in a furious chase across the world of ghosts right in the middle of ancient London.

The game is supposed to be out some time in Quater 3 of 2009. Sounds like they’re trying for a Halloween dated release!

Richard Garriott going back to Medieval Fantasy?

Is the creator of one of the best RPG series, Richard Garriott, going back to his roots in Medieval Fantasy? Well, we can only hope. Garriott, the man behind the newer science fiction MMO, Tabula Rasa, thinks he just might. So what changed is mind? Maybe it was his recent trip to space that changed how he felt about the genre. Or, maybe he’s just tired of working on games that feature guns and aliens? How boring is the future? Pretty dang boring, if you ask me. Now, what’s exciting? Medieval fantasy.

I mean, there are swords and ogres and dragons and all that kind of crap! Stuff dreams are made of!

Well, according to this entry over at Wired, Garriott has said that he’ll “probably” return to the realm of Medieval Fantasy, which makes the fangirl swell with delight.

Here’s what Garriott has to say about his possible decision to come back to the dark side:

After 25 years at Origin, the last thing I wanted to make was yet another medieval fantasy game,” Garriott said. “Now, after a very interesting break, I’m keen to get back into the fray and work on a new game. Probably medieval fantasy and probably online; there’s something very powerful about getting people together

And this all reminds me… I started playing Ultima 7.5 again and stopped playing it. I need to get back to it, because that game is seriously addicting.

Ahhhh, the world is right again.

Indy Game - Gravity Bone

There is an interesting new action/adventure independently created game that I just found over at Indie Games called Gravity Bone. If you like people who are entirely made up of cube like shapes, then this game is probably for you!

In the game, you play a secret agent. I’m not really sure what the story is about, but it sounds exciting:

The lobby desk of the Saturday Club is pock-marked with New Musical bullets. Seven bullets, to be exact. They’ve never been removed and have never been painted over. Why? Frankly, who cares.

To make it in Nuevos Aires, one has to have nerves of silk and the filthiest of hands. Mix together a batch of espionage, some high- speed car chases, fire-spewing assassins, and you’ve got one oven that’ll never bake cookies again. We provide the pliers and you bring the moxie.

Do whatever it takes to ensure your loved ones can sleep peaceably at night.

And get paid doing it.

Now, does that sound cool? Being a spy is fun!

According to Indie Games, this little thing will only take 20 minutes to play. And then you won’t be confused as to what the hell is going on anymore. Definitely worth checking out!

GOG.com brings us Broken Sword 2

Have you ever heard of GOG.com? Well, if you haven’t, then I’ll let you in on a little secret. GOG.com, which stands for Good Old Games, is a place where you can go to legally purchase and download older games instead of trying to steal them off the Internet! And one of the best parts about this website is that the games are pretty dang cheap to buy!

Where else can you go to get a classic game to download for $5.99? Sure, you can try Steam, but chances are, you’ll only be able to find newer games. And you probably won’t be able to find any adventure games, unlike GOG.com, which has a boat load!

Recently, GOG.com just announced that they will be releasing Broken Sword 2: The Smoking Mirror (which just came out yesterday) and Broken Sword 3: The Sleeping Dragon for download. And there are a bunch of other adventure games where that came from! Check out the catalog here.

Now, if we could see some old school LucasArts and Sierra games, this would be the best game download website ever created!

NCSoft says MMO Tabula Rasa free for now

At some point last week, NCSoft posted that Tabula Rasa shall now be free! Free like coupons you get in the mail every Wednesday that you eventually throw away, because you don’t need a new garage door replacement every week! And not only that, you can download the game client for free as well! So, you got monthly subscriptions being free. You’ve got game clients being free. That’s a lot of freedom.

Now, the downside to all this freeness is that you have to wear your underpants at all times while playing this game. Okay, that’s not the real bad news. NCSoft probably doesn’t care if you play naked. The real bad news is that the game’s monthly fee is only free until February 28, 2009. That kind of stinks, but I’m thinking it’ll give you plenty of time to go around and blow up all the aliens that your little heart can stand.

Now, all you have to do is go here and create an account. It’ll ask for your credit card number, but you shant be charged. When you’ve got that taken care of, go here to request a Tabula Rasa code. Then get your code, put it into the account management stuff and download the client.

FREE ALIEN DEATH PARTIES!

Read the press release for all the information and the link from which to download the client.

Memento Mori game coming soon!

About 6 or 7 months ago, dtp entertainment announced a new adventure thriller game for PC called Memento Mori. Now, it’s been awhile since anything has been said about the game, but they’ve finally gotten themselves a trailer, which means the game must be coming to store shelves fairly quickly - probably early 2009!

Here’s what you can look forward to in the story:

Colonel Ostankovich, the commander of a special police department in St Petersburg, and the man who put his honesty at stake by swearing that under his command not an item will get lost in the Hermitage, receives a report of a short alarm failure in the Hermitage. He suspects that something happened. To avoid losing his reputation, he contacts Maxim Durand through Larisa Svetlova. Due to his past, Maxim is at his disposal and has to help him.

In the search for the stolen paintings Max and Lara (mostly on their own) visit the Hermitage, an old library, the Interpol’s headquarters in Lyon, the residence in Scotland and further locations. They interrogate the suspects, search for data, break codes and discover forgeries. All their journeys finally lead Max, accompanied by his brother, to the Finnish cloister. Strange deaths, secret signs and increasingly weird behaviour of Max’s brother André and of those around him force Max to the very edge of sanity.

Check out the trailer below:

The game will be playable in three different languages: Czech, German and English. This game will sure to be a world traveler.

Behind the Bad Part 3

strong_bad_character_art_2.jpg

Back in October, I posted a few “behind the scenes” videos released by TellTale for Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People. And apparently when Strong Bad’s not answering e-mails or starring in video games, he’s out being a big ol’ jerk. But what can you expect?

He is Strong Bad, after all. Check out Behind the Bad Part 3:

Broken Sword: Shadows of the Templars coming to Wii/DS

According to DS Fanboy, next year we’ll be seeing an classic adventure game coming to both the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo Wii. The game, Broken Sword: Shadows of the Templars, was originally released in November 1996 and received a ton of great reviews, so it should be the perfect game to bring to the DS and Wii.

Here’s some information about the game from the press release:

Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars – The Director’s Cut builds on the original, boasting a new and explosive narrative interwoven with the first story. New puzzles have been added for Nintendo DS and Wii that specifically utilize Nintendo’s unique control methods. The game also features stunning animated facial expressions drawn by Dave Gibbons, the artistic genius behind the comic book and upcoming movie, Watchmen.

“These new platforms and their innovative controls enabled us to translate and enrich the point-and-click gaming experience in a way that no other console allowed before,” said Charles Cecil, founder of Revolution Software and designer of the Broken Sword series. “Through Dave’s animated faces, the game’s characters are portrayed as empathetic and emotional - driving the narrative in a way that has never been done before in an adventure game. The Director’s Cut has allowed me to deliver my true vision for the series.”

Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars - The Director’s Cut starts with the player in control of charming Parisian photo-journalist Nicole Collard, who witnesses the brutal and horrifying murder of one of Paris’s richest and most influential statesmen. During her investigations, which feature exclusive new locations, Nico meets amiable American George Stobbart, who has been unwittingly caught up in the sinister and bloody theft of an ancient manuscript. Together, they are drawn into a terrifying conspiracy rooted in a long-forgotten medieval legend.

Yet another adventure game on the DS and Wii. Pretty sweet!

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days movie montage! Strike a pose!

kingdomhearts.jpg

There are some interesting videos coming out for Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days for the Nintendo DS from our friends over in Japan. I mean, they put together a small montage of things we can expect to see when the game finally makes it to American shores!

And in this video, you get to see the Beast from Beauty and the Beast kick some ever lovin’ butt. I love the Beast! The thing is, if he was made back into a prince in the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast, why is he still the Beast in all the new movies and games he’s in?

All those Disney movies are tricky!

Check out the video:

I can’t WAIT for this game to hit the DS. It’s going to be one of the best games you’ll be able to find on the DS next year!
